I want to begin with this: Thank you. More on that in a bit.
If I’m being honest, which is something I always strive to be, I think I was struggling a bit over the last week with what to say.
I intentionally started this experiment quietly (assuming that I could hone my thoughts writing in the wilderness for a while before anyone might notice) — and was surprised to gain new subscribers so quickly.
With an audience now, however small intimate, I feel some pressure to figure out what this blog is going to be about. The best practice according to many is to focus on one topic or niche. And I may one day. I could pick something and start writing. Leadership. Productivity. Wellness. Photography. Travel. Usability. I have a lot of interests. But it’s important to acknowledge I didn’t start this to create an SEO-optimized content marketing business blog. I’m writing for much the same reason as Sue Likkel, who said recently, “Now I’m trying to find my voice and one tool to accomplish that is writing."
(Worth Knowing is worth reading, too, by the way.)
As I look forward, it’s also instructive to look back.
Here are the topics I wrote about from 2003 to 2011 across multiple blogs:
WebBP::Blog: A weblog a little closer to home.
Design Matters: Insights on branding, color, design, strategy and usability from a guy who is passionate about this stuff.
WorthMention: A place to share observations, ideas and commentary by others.
I no longer have a similar list from my original blog, byline: bryce, where I wrote daily from 2000 to 2003, because the categories didn’t migrate with the script I used to export the entries from one blogging platform (Userland Manila) to another (TypePad). Here is what I do have:
Synthesizing a bit, these are all still things I love and care about: architecture, branding, business, color (and light!), design, entrepreneurship, film, music, photography, privacy, strategy, travel, typography, urban planning, usability and web/tech.
It’s likely that the seed of this next chapter is somewhere in there.
I’m positively delighted to have you along for this journey and hope you’ll continue with me.
Over the last day or so, a few of you have commented and messaged me — and it’s been really wonderful to hear from you and gratifying to hear. Two that touched me:
“I love your writing. Please do more.”
“I hope you keep writing, Bryce!”
I will keep writing. ☺
Thank you for reading.
Until next time,
-bp
Thank YOU for the endorsement!
This post read more like listening to you talk as you sort your thoughts. Your voice is authentic here. Fellow writers who wrestle with the same issues you mention nod their heads. Yep! Us too. Thank you for shining a light on the process. It resonates. Best!
The category or topic of your writing is less important than the process.
It is in the process of writing that you will find what needs to be said.
