This week we share a little vignette, highlight a favorite holiday movie, and look back at some of the most popular issues this year. If you’re not already a subscriber, you can become here:
I woke up in a city that isn’t my own yesterday morning. I walked in the rain to find a coffee shop open on this, the Friday morning before Christmas. At the table next to me, a guy was diligently writing cards to his clients on nice ivory cardstock with his firm’s name embossed in gold.
When he got up to leave, he asked the staff if they were going to be around next week or if they would be getting some time off. He wished them happy holidays and said he’d see them in the new year. Clearly he was a regular.
I flew home yesterday. I am grateful that I don’t usually have to travel around this time of year. The airport was busy, the flight was full, and traffic was bad.
Still, there are moments all around that can make one smile if you notice them. The musician playing a guitar and providing a calming sound amidst the chaos of the concourse. The sun coming out for a moment and making everything glow. This giant Post-it note hanging in a construction area — and then discovering the first glimpses of the new wood ceiling at my home airport, coming next May.

Talking about airports around the holidays brings to mind one of my favorite holiday movies, Love Actually.
If you have never seen it, I would highly recommend you do. It was released in 2003 and I discovered in sometime after its 10th anniversary. This year is its 20th anniversary. I’ve been wanting to watch it again for the past few years and did last night and it still holds up. It has a lovely cast and is a funny, heartwarming rom-com set during the holidays. It has something for everyone.
Here is the official 20th anniversary trailer (2023):
